Bicycle Resource Center

Since 2004, our primary project has been the Bicycle Resource Center (BRC). This is a hands-on bicycle workshop where Chainbreaker members who have gone through one of our training programs help others get a used bike and/or learn how to repair and tune-up it up. Since we aren't a service-based organization, we don't do repairs or tune-ups in the same way that most bike shops do. At Chainbreaker, we don't do anything for anyone. If you have a bike that you need to fix or you need a bike to ride and you can't afford to pay for it, stop by the shop and we will guide you through the process of becoming a member and getting a bike and/or fixing it up.

If you don't have time to work on your own bike,or you don't want to get your hands dirty, we suggest visiting a local bike shop, or looking through classified ads and at yard sales. We can give you recommendations of places to look and what to look for.

We try to keep our limited resources open to people who honestly can't afford to buy a new or used bike somewhere else. So if you can afford to buy a new or used bike, please do so.

If you need a bike, please come by the Shop when we are open and talk to us in person. If you have donations of bicycles, parts, tools or accessories, please bring them by the shop when we are open.

If you have any questions, you can email our BRC Coordinator at , or give us a call at 505-989-3858.

Training Wheels

Training Wheels is the BRC's (Bicycle Resource Center) response to the unique needs and learning styles of our young community members. The cost of purchase and maintenance of a bike for a child is simply out of reach for many low-income families. At the same time, young people tend to outgrow the size of their bikes very quickly. Through Training Wheels, youth ages 11 - 16 learn bicycle mechanics and young boys and girls ages 5 -10 receive the refurbished bikes. The young mechanics then share their learned skills with their peers. Participants in the learning side of the program are guided through the process of repairing a kid bike as instructors teach general knowledge of tool usage, mechanics, fundamental work skills and basic principles of conservation, engineering and green technology. Hands-on experience making the repairs on the kid bikes helps to solidify the understanding of bicycle functionality, geometry and mechanics. After repairs to kid bikes are completed and a safety check is performed, they will be distributed to children ages 5 - 10.
